Overview
Gokyo valley trek is a unique Himalayan path situated just in the east-northern part of the world’s famous Everest Base Camp Trek and also the foothill of the world’s 6th highest peak Mt. Cho-Oyu. This trek is home to the beautiful lakes, biggest Ngo-Zumba glacier and the best view point of an amazing Khumbu Himalayas. Gokyo-Ri (5,361m) is a small hill from where we can see 4 of above 8,000m mountains and more than a dozen of peaks including Mt. Everest (8,848m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Makalu (8,463m), and Mt. Cho-Oyu (8,201m). The morning sunrise on the top of Gokyo-Ri when the sun hits the several peaks and mountains are really awesome.
Gokyo valley trekking cost
The Gokyo valley trekking cost is depending on the services of the company. Our company takes U$$1650 per person and that is including: all official work for the guest, 3 night hotel in Kathmandu with bed and breakfast, Kathmandu valley UNESCO world heritage side sightseeing including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, all ground transportations, flight ticket from Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu, trekking map, all foods and accommodations while trekking without hard drinks, wine, beer and cold drinks, all foods, accommodations, salary, insurance and transportations for Nepali crew staffs, and finally welcome and farewell dinner at the cultural restaurant in Kathmandu etc.
Best seasons to trek in Gokyo Valley
Gokyo Valley is also the high route trekking trail such as Annapurna circuit trek, Manaslu circuit trek and Everest base camp trek. You can trek Gokyo valley normally from September to May and June but the best month to trek in Gokyo valley is October to Mid-December in Autumn and Mid-March, April and May in spring. If you join in this time, you get the good weather, distance visibility and eco friendly temperatures but it is very hard to get the rooms sometime because these months are the peak seasons in the Himalayas.
Foods and accommodations in Gokyo Valley Trek
Gokyo Valley trek is a part of Everest base camp trek. It is comparatively the second most visited trekking route in Everest region after the Everest base camp. The accommodation in Gokyo valley trek is normally the best. You get the neat and clean 2 bed sharing rooms everywhere and normally outside bathroom. The foods are also good everywhere. You get the toast, chapati, Tibetan bread with butter, jam and honey, boiled eggs, omelet, muscly with milk-fruits, Porridge, tea, coffee or set breakfast and so on for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, you get the Mo:Mo’s, Spaghetti with hot Sause, Sherpa strew, Fried potatoes, Mars rolls, Pizza, variety of soups, cheese items and Nepali local dishes Dal-Bhat thali set, or you can choose from the menu which you get Infront of your table.
Transportation for Gokyo Valley Trek
The transportation in Gokyo Valley trek is only 2 options that is depending from your trekking start points. If you want to start the trekking from Jiri-Siwalaya, there is only options for Jeep hiring or catch the local bus from Kathmandu. If you want to begins the trek from Phaplu, the flight and road transportations is available but if you want to begins your trek from Lukla then only flight option is available or you can book the Helicopter but that is really expensive. This information is only needed for the individual or solo hikers but not needed for the organize travelers.
About the high-altitude sickness
High-altitude sickness is the major problem in high route trekking in Nepal. The high-altitude sickness happens the causes of thin oxygen level in the dry mountain side and the safety option is drink plentiful purified water, boiled water and soups, keep the body warm, take the healthy foods, and climb slowly with maintaining the height. If incase suffering from the high-altitude sickness then, the best option is rest at the same altitude or descend as soon as possible from the high-altitude to the low land because mountain always wait us but not wait our life to the mountain. The symptom of high-altitude sickness is headache, dizziness, vomiting, laziness, insomnia and feeling tired.
Is this trekking fit for solo traveler?
Yes, of course, this trek is normally the best high land trekking route and it is the perfect destination for the booking traveler and also the individual or solo hikers. But we don’t recommend this trekking personally for the individual or solo trekkers because there is high risk to your every step. This is also the high route trekking, if you become sick or ill, there is not options for road transportation then if you could, you can descend yourself otherwise you should have to book the Helicopter which is very expensive. That is not only the matter, if you become sick on the remote side then you don’t get anybody for your help then you could finish your life. So, if possible, it is better to join the local travel agency in Nepal or take at least a guide or the experienced porter for your safe journey. And also, if you join with us, travel insurance is compulsory for us before heading to the Gokyo Valley trek.
How difficult is the Gokyo Valley Trekking?
Gokyo Valley Trekking is medium hard Himalayan trail in Khumbu Everest region of Nepal. This is the high route trekking path, it requires the perfect physical fitness, good health conditions, mentally cool personality and your strong dedications. You can do this trek if you are accepting the challenge in the Himalayas but it is altitudinally the tough. You need to sleep at 4850m Gokyo 3rd lake and hiking to Gokyo-Ri 5,361m for outstanding Himalayan sceneries. That is really the tough altitude for the first-time travelers. So, before heading to the Gokyo Valley trek, the best options is better to keep your body fit, manage the sufficient travel money and choose the perfect month for trekking.
Detailed itinerary for Gokyo Valley Trekking
Day 1: Kathmandu Arrival
When you arrived at Tribhuwan international airport in Kathmandu. Our representative picks up you from the airport to the hotel. If you come early day, you can visit the tourist places Thamel for Asian to Western delicious foods or relax at your hotel. In the evening at 6 pm, we meet you and brief you once about the programs. If you have remaining dues, please pay at our first meeting.
Day 2: Sightseeing Kathmandu Valley
After the first breakfast at your hotel, our cultural guide receives you at the hotel for sightseeing around Kathmandu valley UNESCO world heritage site including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath. All of these places are the historical importance. Rest of the time, prepare to the trekking.
Day 3: Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding
Be ready early in the morning for a small flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. It takes 30-35m. You can take the thrilling flight experience which display you the several peaks and mountains on the route in the clear day. You can take breakfast at Lukla where you meet your trekking crew members. Enjoy the mountain breakfast with your crew members and trek to Phakding at your first day. From Lukla, add your footprint like as the great mountaineer and adventure trekkers, pass the highlander settlement with experience their culture and religions.
Day 4: Trek to Namche bazaar
Follow the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi river bank, inter the famous Sagarmatha National Park Conservation Area Project, cross the famous Hillary bridge with seeing the tower peak Mt. Everest and several others. Finally, you reach at the slopy town Namche Bazaar for accommodation. Namche Bazaar is a mountain hill where you can get normal to branded trekking gears which is needed for you or miss to pack from your home town. You can get the variety of foods and relaxation places there. If you want to withdraw some travel money, Namche Bazaar is the last option to use your ATM card.
Day 5: Acclimatization day
Today is your acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar. You can hike to Khumjung green valley and Everest view point or sight trip to Thame village you can choose yourself. Hiking to Everest view point is far better option for seeing the conjure images of Mt. Everest and neighboring peaks. On the way, you can see some wildlife and birds, they are playing in the nature. Don’t disturb them because these are the ornament of the Sagarmatha national park.
Day 6: Trek to Dole Village
Follow the same path till Kyanjuma then turn left. The Everest base camp and Gokyo valley trekking path separate from there. Take lunch at Mong Danda which is a small hill but perfect view point of specially Mt. Amadablam then continue trek to Dole from where you see the world’s 6th gighest peak Mt. Cho-Oyu.
Day 7: Trek to Mochhermo
The path leads you closeup view point in the mountain side. Walk around 4-5 hours is enough today with seeing the white hill around you but, be careful about the high-altitude sickness. The high-altitude sickness might be harmful sometime for failure journey. Drink 2-3 liters of boiled water, take the different types of soup items, we recommend specially Garlic soup before dinner and black tea, mint tea, ginger lemon tea or so on items. We don’t recommend you to take milk items and meat items while trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas.
Day 8: Trek to Gokyo lake
Today is the final day for your highest accommodation place Gokyo lake. The entire scenery is really speechless such as lakes, glacier, peaks and mountains but be safe from the high-altitude. You can hike to 5th lake side or if the weather will be cleared, you can climb to Gokyo-ri for sunset and surrounding Himalayan scenery from where the whole lovely natural views are flowless. Take some memorable photos and videos then descend to the hotel. If you go to Gokyo-Ri in the day, please don’t miss to carry your headlight and at least a bottle of boiled water.
Day 9: Hiking to Gokyo ri then trek to Dole Village
Hiking to Gokyo-Ri (5,361m) for sunrise in the morning takes 2-3 hours. When the sun hits the top of the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest and neighboring peaks are really speechless. Descend to your hotel, take breakfast there and continue trek to back as the same way to Dole.
Day 10: Dole to Tengboche Monastery
The path follows the same way back till Phortse Tanga then cross the bridge and climb the famous Sherpa land Phortse village where you take lunch then continue trek to the highland Buddhist Monastery Tengboche. Tengboche is a small hill but culturally the religious places where the Mani-Rimdu festival happens in 8th, 9th, and 10th, of November in every year. At that time, the locals around that side gathers and celebrates the festival.
Day 11: Trek to Namche Bazaar
You follow the descend path till Dudhkoshi river bank then cross the bridge and climb up till Kyanjuma from where your Gokyo Valley path was separate then follow the same way back to Namche Bazaar.
Day 12: Trek to Lukla
Follow the same path back to Lukla. Today, you finish your adventure Gokyo valley trek, it’s our humble request, celebrate your last trekking day at Lukla with your trekking crew members. This is not compulsory but, the guide and porter aspect some Tips, if you are happy then you can give them. Be safe and share your sorrow and happiness with your trekking guide every day. Day 13: Fly back to Kathmandu
Be ready at early morning. The flight begins at around 6:30 am so concern with your guide. When you arrive at domestic airport in Kathmandu. Our representative picks up you from the airport to the hotel. Relax full day at Thamel with the variety of foods and relaxation services if you want or you can buy some gift for your family, neighbor or friends. At 6: pm, we meet you at your hotel and provide the farewell dinner in the cultural restaurant.
Day 14: Prepare to go your home town
Be ready for return back to your home town. Our representative receives you from the hotel to the airport before 3 hours at your international flight and say goodbye.
