Island Peak is the beauty of the Imja valley. The first name of this peak was Imja Tse but the British Mount Everest expedition group changed the name Island peak because its appearance as the island in a sea of ice. This peak was first climbed by the legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norge and his British team Charles Wylie, Charles Evans and Alf Gregory in 1953. After that, this peak is climbed more than 100 of 1000 of adventure peak climbing enthusiast and challenging mountain expeditioners every year. This peak is called the acclimatization peak of Mt. Everest expedition so before heading to the Mt. Everest, almost all groups climbed this peak for acclimatization but nowadays, many groups divert from Island peak to Labuche peak for relief from its busy route options.

Island peak is the mountain peak of Nepal and the most climbed trekking and mountain expeditioners selected peak in the historical record of National Mountaineering Association of Nepal (NMA). This peak is situated among the tower peak Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse and peak 38 in the east and Mt. Makalu in the north ridge. The peak is technically moderate to climb but it requires the perfect physical fitness and mentally strong personality. This peak is in Khumbu Everest region so before ascending to Island peak, you can do Everest Base Camp Trek, eat and sleep at the last settlement Goreksep (5110m) and hiking to Kalapattar (5545m) for good acclimatization. Kalapattar is the best places to see Mt. Everest face to face and also the sunrise view when the sun hits the top of Mt. Everest in the morning is just beyond your expectation. The Khumbu ice fall, Khumbu glacier and Pyramid is also another attraction to you. While returning back from Everest Base Camp, Khongmala pass (5550m) is another option for acclimatization and the perfect mountain scenery in Khumbu region.

You get the Tea house settlement till Chhukung then trek to Island peak base camp where you should have to take everything in the tent for 1 night or 2. Everything is included such as foods, accommodations, tea, coffee and plenty of hot water. You get the quality foods but that is really very normal. Please follow your climbing guide’s suggestion. Be patient and friendly at that altitude and do the team work. You might start to climb Island peak at around 2-3 am early in the morning and spend 6-8 hours on the way ups and down. When you reach on the top of Island Peak (6119m), you see the amazing landform of Imja Tse valley with the highest peak Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Peak 38, Mt. Makalu (8463m) and several other snowy peaks around. You can take a lot of photos and videos but we kindly request you, be careful for your proper safety, because this tour might be the first tour for you in the mountain but we already faced a lot of obstacle while climbing and trekking in the different high route in the Himalayas.

After ascending Island peak, please descend slowly because climbing up requires more energy level but descend requires more concentration in the rocky and snowy path. You have 1 more day at Island peak base camp that is for getting extra chance if not succeed to attempt the top caused by the bad weather or not support your health. If succeed to climb, return back to Chhukung at the same day and stay overnight at the tea house. After Chhukung, you follow the Imjatse valley the Sherpas home town Dingboche village and Imja Tse khola then follow the same way back to Lukla via Tengboche monastery and Namche Bazaar then fly back to Kathmandu in the next.

The best Seasons to climb Island Peak

The best time to climb Island peak is Mid-September to Mid-December in Autumn and Mid-March to May in spring seasons because of its perfect visibility, weather clearance and suitable temperatures in the Himalayas. You can normally climb Island peak in June-July and August that is the raining seasons in Nepal and you can see the less visibility in the mountain and everywhere around.

High-altitude sickness is the major problem for everybody in the Himalayas. The symptom of high-altitude sickness is headache, dizzying, nausea, indigestion, fatigue, insomnia, and back paining. The option to safe from high-altitude sickness is drink sufficient water and take the soups and liquids, walk slowly and maintained the height every day. If the high-altitude sickness happened then, the best options is descending as soon as possible or rescue by the Helicopter because, mountain always wait us but not wait our life to the mountain.
